Friday's Foto

While it may be a few months before they lay any eggs, our local Red-tailed Hawks have already begun their annual bonding rituals. Pairs can be heard calling each other and engaging in mock-battles in the sky above their territories. Many of the young birds from last year's broods, like this one in the Bronx, will soon be "encouraged" by their parents to leave the territory and seek out their own home base and mates. "Nelly" and "Max's" nest at Nelly's Lawn in Prospect Park miraculously survived the hurricane and the pair were seen checking out the nest tree this week. Also, I recently discovered a new nest site in Brooklyn's Holy Cross Cemetery.
