Field Trip to Bashakill Marsh/Shawangunk Grasslands
Saturday, June 3, 2023, 7:00am - 3:00pm

Description: Come with us to a designated Bird Conservation Area that has 200+species of birds including nesting Bald Eagles and Ospreys. Grab your binoculars and join Naturalist TaitJohansson for a full day of birding on a Field Trip to Bashakill Marsh/Shawangunk Grasslands. Bashakill supports wetland-dependent breeding species like Virginia Rail, Sora, Common Gallinule, bitterns, cuckoos,and a large array of songbirds. The National Wildlife Refuge has breeding populations of Bobolink, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Upland Sandpiper.

Black Birders Week: Spring Birding at Randall's Island

Description: Join Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Feminist Bird Club, and NYC Audubon in celebrating the last day of Black Birders Week! Participants will be guided to observe birds throughout the diverse habitats of Randall's Island Park while traveling along a choice of two birding routes. One will be led by NYC Audubon's Efua Peterson and the other by Akilah Lewis of the Feminist Bird Club. Both routes are mostly flat and paved trails with some open grassy areas and occasional shade cover. Please note that one route option will experience more hilled and rugged terrain. Total distance would be about 1 to 1.5 miles from beginning to end dependent upon your route choice.

Black Birders Week: Community Barbecue at Randall's Island

Description: Join Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Feminist Bird Club, and NYC Audubon in celebrating and amplifying Black birders and Black joy at our Community BBQ! Our songs, stories, and voices will sing out like the birds in the trees and skies above. Food will be available to purchase, but you can bring your own BBQ treats as well. The New Amsterdam Music Association will be present and complementing the sounds of nature with live jazz music in the Park. This event will also be joined by Bobby Horvath and live birds of prey from Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation (WINNOR). Bring a blanket to lay out on the grass and join the celebration! Tables are limited: elders and those with physical needs will have priority.
