Birding in Peace

Description: Before our gates open to the public, this early morning walking tour provides special access to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home, some temporarily. Throughout the season, you’ll witness an ever-changing display of wildlife. April brings pine warblers, woodpeckers, and thousands of migrating songbirds among the blooming magnolias and dogwoods, while herons gather at the glacial ponds. May and early June offer peak birding with over 163 species passing through, including ruby-throated hummingbirds and wood warblers. Summer sees young red-tailed hawks taking flight, along with abundant butterflies and dragonflies. By late July, the first migratory birds begin their journey south.

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation: Butterflies

Description: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, in Westchester County, New York, is a perennial destination for butterfly aficionados, and this is a peak date for early summer species when nectar-rich dogbane and milkweed come into bloom. Targets include many skippers and showy “true” butterflies, which are hard to find in significant numbers elsewhere. Ward Pound Ridge is also a top site for odonates, invertebrates, reptiles, and many birds.

Meadowlands: Dekorte Park & Pontoon Ride

Description: The Meadowlands District and River Barge Park are just 4 miles from Manhattan. The area is being restored to benefit all wildlife, including birds, and to provide easy access to nature in the shadow of NYC. We will explore the waterways (part of the Hackensack River watershed) by pontoon boat from 8-10 am, followed by a 60-90 minute walk in Richard W. DeKorte Park, also part of the Meadowlands. Our leader is Christopher Takas, Board Member and Trip Committee leader at Bergen County Audubon. Directions will be provided for driving, and also for transportation via bus or train. Expected expenses are driver compensation or public transit + taxi costs; also it is also customary to tip the pontoon Captain.

Watch Hill, Fire Island

Description: Located in the middle of Fire Island, the barrier beach that runs for over 30 miles along the south shore of Long Island, Watch Hill in June is a great place to see a variety of breeding species. The salt marshes of the Great South Bay are important strongholds for Saltmarsh and Seaside Sparrows, as well as other marsh specialists such as Willets and Clapper Rails. Endangered Piping Plovers are found on the ocean beach, where we may also encounter Dolphins and Humpbacked Whales. We will meet at the Fire Island ferry for a pleasant 30-minute boat ride to Watch Hill. Bring plenty of water and food, sun lotion, and bug spray, and a hat is strongly suggested.
