Directions: From Route 25A in East Norwich, take Route 106 north to Oyster Bay. Make left on to Lexington Ave then left onto West Main Street. At the Mill Pond (on the left), bear to the right as if to go to Bayville. At the first traffic light (water will be on your right), make a left onto Cleft Road. Take Cleft Road to Frost Mill Road, make a left. (If you wind up on the causeway going over Beaver Dam, you have gone too far.) Shu Swamp will be on your right after you go under the train trestle. Do NOT use your GPS. You will end up in the wrong place.

The area supports characteristic breeding wetland-dependent species, abundant waterfowl, and several species at risk.

Description: Participants will gather at the Carousel parking lot in Willowbrook Park. From Willowbrook Park the White Trail brings hikers through the Corson’s Brook Woods and on into the Greenbelt. Hikers will continue on to Heyerdahl Hill, through Buck’s Hollow and eventually back to Willowbrook Park. Early May affords a great opportunity to identify birds and pinkster azalea. Bird song and forest flowers will make for an enjoyable walk.

Crooke’s Point

Description: Maritime sand spits such as Crooke’s Point are dynamic typographical features formed and sculpted by water and wind action. Join naturalist Paul T. Lederer in a talk and walk where the geological and human history of the site, as well as the plants and animals that call this place home, will be discussed. It is suggested that walk participants dress in pants that cover the full leg and shoes appropriate for sand dune areas. It is also suggested that participants consider sun protection such as hats, sun block and water or other hydrating liquids. Insect repellent is also recommended. Walk participants will meet in Great Kills Park Beach Center Parking Lot (Parking Area “G”) near the beginning of the dirt permit road leading out to Crooke’s Point. To get to the meeting spot, enter the park at the Buffalo Street entrance at Hylan Boulevard and follow Buffalo Street through the park to where it ends just before the dirt Crooke’s Point Permit Road.
