Friday's Foto

Generically referred to as the "Praying Mantis", this Chinese Mantis is one of two mantid species introduced to North America in the 1800s. The other is the European Mantis. Both were introduced to control pest insects from ravaging crops. It's unclear if that strategy worked, but they do frequently get eaten by birds (and occasionally attack hummingbirds).
