Staten Island Early Fall Migrants and Sea Watch

Description: Join longtime birder and Staten Island resident Anthony Ciancimino for a tour around the south and east shores of the island. We will start at the Great Kills Park bathhouse, where we will have a seawatch (conditions permitting). Here, we can see a variety of waterbirds, such as gulls, terns, and possibly even Brown Pelicans. From there, we will explore the nearby trails for migrating warblers and other songbirds. Depending on activity, we will then move on to check the marshes, where we can see a great variety of wading birds, such as egrets and ibis, as well as shorebirds. There are a plethora of locations on the island we can check, so Anthony will discern which areas will be best on the day of the event. Please wear comfortable shoes, as we will walk on beaches and rocky terrain at times, totalling a few miles or so. Attendees should bring insect repellent as well.

In Memoriam

I just learned the sad news that longtime Brooklyn birder, naturalist, painter and former president of the Brooklyn Bird Club, Paul Keim has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Peter Dorosh has posted something on his blog here:

In memoriam: Paul Keim

Paul was the trip leader for the very first bird walk I ever attended back in the '90s. I remember asking him about a strange, out-of-place looking lump of wood that I had spotted. His astonished response, at first, baffled me. He then explained that it was a sleeping Common Nighthawk, not something easy to find. Beginner's luck, I suppose. Paul was more than just a birder, that is why I referred to him as a naturalist; he seemed to be an encyclopedia of knowledge on bats, birds, botanics and almost everything in between. He leaves this world having made a positive impression on many.

Description: If you can’t make our Shorebirds Workshop and Field Trip, we are offering another chance to take a trip birding with Naturalist Tait Johansson to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This trip is timed to coincide with high tide when the marshes of the open bay are submerged, but the East Pond mudflats are not tidal, providing foraging and/or resting areas while the waters are high outside. Wear rubber boots, or old sneakers and a change of footwear for later, as we’re expecting mud possibly up to above the ankles while we search for Glossy Ibis, Great Blue and Yellow-crowned Night Herons, Osprey, egrets, and possibly flocks of hundreds of sandpipers and plovers of many species.

Dragonfly Talk and Walk

Description: Join naturalist Paul Lederer and explore the lives of dragonflies, insects that have inhabited our planet millions of years before dinosaurs walked the earth. Paul will discuss the biology, life histories and identification of these creatures of wonder and then conduct a “dragonfly safari” to the shores of Lake Ohrbach. Bring binoculars if you have them and dress appropriately for the woods and trails of the great outdoors. It is recommended that you bring water/hydration fluids, insect repellent and sunblock. Participants will meet in the main Pouch Camp parking lot along Manor Road, beside the Boy Scout store.
