Counting Tree Rings

New York City lost tens of thousands of trees as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Street trees, public parks and cemeteries paid a heavy toll, but one person has used the opportunity to study the age of some of those tree.

Green-Wood Cemetery arborist Adam Rychlicki has marked the growth rings on some of the cemeteries casualties with pushpins. This beech tree (I think), which had been growing next to the grave of William Poole, has its growth marked off in 10 year intervals. That would have made it 110 years old when it was felled by the storm. Ansel Adams was born the year that this tree was planted.
