The Philadelphia Vireo is a relatively scarce Fall migrant seen around Brooklyn and NYC. Despite its common name, this Boreal forest breeding species is very uncommon in the meeting place of our Founding Fathers. It got its name as it was first described by John Cassin in 1842 from a specimen collected near Philadelphia. This small songbird is sometimes confused with the similar Warbling Vireo or Tennessee Warbler. Unlike warblers, though, vireos forage in a slower, more deliberate manner as they move through trees in search of food. This page has a nice in-hand photo comparison of three vireos. The IUCN Red List lists this species as "Least Concern".
