The
Whimbrel is the most widespread, large curlew sandpiper of the family of shorebirds known as
Scolopacidae. They breed in Arctic regions across both North America and Eurasia and winter along the coasts of six continents. Due to this species extremely large range and relative abundance (although numbers have declined) the
IUCN lists the Whimbrel's conservation status as "Least Concern". In Brooklyn look for migrating Whimbrels from late-July to early-September at Calvert Vaux Park, Gerritsen Creek and Plum(b) Beach. Read about the Center for Conservation Biology's Whimbrel tracking project
