Sparrows species are finally beginning their southbound migration. One of my favorites that is rare but regularly seen on migration around Brooklyn is the
Vesper Sparrow. This chunky sparrow is named for its habit of singing just before
dusk. They prefer open habitats with grass, such as meadows, pastures and prairies. One significant feature is a bold, white ring around its eyes. In flight they flash white outer tail feathers.
