Protectors of Pine Oak Woods (Staten Island)
Saturday, June 7, 2014, 11:00 A.M. to 1:00P.M.
Foraging vs. Gardening?
Wonder what’s edible in your neighborhood? Though humanity has eaten nutritious wild plants for centuries, today we are used to using processed herbs and vegetables often grown hundreds of miles away. Join herbalist Gert Coleman at Conference House Park to learn safe and easy ways to forage for and cultivate wild and native plants for culinary and medicinal usage. We will walk the beach and paths, ending in the Colonial Herb Garden. Meet in the parking lot in front of the Visitors Center.
To register or to receive more information e-mail gert.coleman@verizon.net.

Saturday, June 7, 2014, Noon to 2:00 P.M.
North Mt Loretto State Forest
From phragmites marshes to mature forests we will observe a variety of ecosystems as we search for evidence of animal life from frogs and salamanders to deer and muskrats. We will also observe traces of the geologic history and human influence of this diverse area. Meet at the parking lot for North Mount Loretto on Amboy Road in Richmond Valley.
For more information phone Clay Wollney at 718-869-6327.

Sunday, June 8, 2014, 11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
Willowbrook Park Field Study
This Protectors walk provides an opportunity to study nature closely in the field. Our route takes the small loop of the white trail from the Carousel to the Archery Range and then to the Chimney Ruin. One goal of the walk is to count how many Tulip Trees you can spot. Bring flower and tree guides, loops or magnifying lenses, and lots and lots of questions. Share your knowledge of plant, fern and tree species with us. Meet at the Carousel; enter at Eton Place off Richmond Avenue. If it’s raining at the time of the walk, the event is postponed to Sunday, June 15.
