The
Great Cormorant is a common overwintering species along coastal Brookyn and New York City. Unlike the much smaller
Double-crested Cormorant, which nests locally and virtually replaces it during the breeding season, the Great Cormorant only breeds from Maine to Greenland in North America. The most common of all cormorant species they are found on every continent except Antarctica and South America. They are also known as the Black Cormorant, the Great Black Cormorant, the Large Cormorant and the Black Shag.
