Friday's Foto

Only about the size of a robin, the Sora is the most common rail species in North America. That is not to say that they are seen often, in fact, quite the opposite is true. They are more frequently heard than seen in their preferred habitat ... marshes. During migration they can occasionally be found in appropriate habitat in our city parks. This past week one was found feeding in a muddy patch of phragmites at the edge of Prospect Lake in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Their Winter range is from central California, to southern Texas and the Gulf Coast states, and south through Central America to South America.
