Common Terns are the most abundant of the tern species to be found around Brooklyn and NYC at this time of year. They are local breeders and, despite their relative abundance in the tri-state area, they are listed as threatened in New York State. In fact, their status in many states is listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Like many seabirds, the Common Tern has a nasal gland that excretes excess salt, allowing them to drink both seawater and freshwater.
