One of my last birds for 2012, the
American Pipit was also one of my first birds for 2013. This high tundra breeding species is often heard during migration when large flock pass overhead making their characteristic "pip-it, pip-it, pip-it" call. Looking much like a drab sparrow, they prefer feeding in short, dry grass, bobbing their tail as they walk. Over the past week small flocks have suddenly been seen on open fields throughout the city's 5 boroughs.
