New York City's resident
Red-tailed Hawk pairs are now fledging this year's batch of offspring in all 5 boroughs. This is "Junior" the adult male who calls Green-Wood Cemetery his territory. Since 2006 he and his mate, "Big Mama", have raised 14 offspring. He began his relationship with Big Mama when he was only a year old and hadn't yet developed the specie's namesake red tail.
Hello. I really enjoy your blog. It inspired me to go to greenwood last weekend to try to get a glimpse of the hawk. I did not see it although I captured dozens of great images of various other birds. Wondering if you could lend some insight as to wear the hawk may be observed.
ReplyDeletethank you. cf
The red-tailed nest is on the Hill of Graves. While fledged, all the young can still be found in the general vicinity. Check my Google map here - http://goo.gl/maps/I951 the Hill of Graves is labeled just southwest of 20th St entrance.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. Ill be there this weekend looking for him again
ReplyDeleteRob, with the aid of your knowledge and map I was able to capture some amazing photos of the hawks at Greenwood. I was wondering if you have seen any Owls at the cemetery? thanks cf
ReplyDeleteChris - Sorry, the owls have disappeared to parts unknown. I think all the chainsaws and chippers after Sandy scared them off.
ReplyDeletethats too bad. Do you know of any other locations to possibly view them?
