The history of birding and Van Cortlandt Park are inseparable. Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank got their starts on Van Cortlandt’s ecologically diverse grounds. These walks celebrate the tradition set forth by these great ornithologists. Guide: Gabriel Willow With Wave Hill Meet at the Perkins Visitor Center. Join naturalist and artist Gabriel Willow on a journey sketching and journaling through the Wave Hill landscape, recording plants, flowers and bird species, as you deepen your observational powers and connect with nature. No drawing experience required; materials provided. Advanced registration is recommended, either online, at the Perkins Visitor Center, or by calling 718-549-3200 x305. Old Mill Road
We’ll follow the multi-use trail overlooking Fresh Kills, pass the famous Hessian Spring as it crosses the path and view Fresh Kills estuary and work our way to the remains of Ketchum’s Mill. We’ll observe traces of the past, examine the present woodland ecosystems and search for evidence of present inhabitants especially deer. Meet in the lot alongside St. Andrew’s Church on Old Mill Road.

Forest Restoration Workshop at the Greenbelt Nature Center
Meet in the Nature Center parking lot at Rockland Avenue and Brielle (additional parking at the Recreation Center nearby). We will be working alongside volunteers for New York Cares removing invasive vines and other plants from the vicinity of the Nature Trail. Protectors will supply tools, gloves and refreshments. After a two hour work session (our 190th consecutive monthly workshop), we will take a short walk over nearby trails.
