Both hawks were unafraid of humans, although the second, ruffled looking one (with the wide belly band) seemed to have little sense of what was safe--he landed with the pigeon in the middle of the street, and had the bus driver not had the sense to stop, he would have been run over. Last year all, except for Pale Male, successfully raised 1 or more young. There are nests near Columbia at Highbridge Park and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. I've never seen one with such a wide belly band. Regarding the other juvenile, some individuals never learn to avoid people and, unfortunately, it often ends up getting injured or killed.
