Another Rare Bird

The good news is that another rare bird has showed up at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The bad news is that I've been unable to arrange my schedule to get over there to see it. This time it is a Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. Their normal US range is parts of southeast Texas, southeast Arizona and Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Andrew Baksh has a nice posting and photos on his blog, as does Corey Finger. Hopefully it sticks around and I'll get a glimpse of it.

A couple years ago, we saw another Black-bellied Whistling Duck at Dailey's Pond Park in South River, (Middlesex County) NJ.

It was certainly an unusual looking duck and we had to refer to our bird guide to correctly id it. However, unlike the duck in Jamaica Bay, no one seemed to be paying much attention to it.

Guess the Dailey's Pond duck was most likely never reported.
